Searching for Utopia is a sculpture of the Belgian artist Jan Fabre. This massive turtle was standing on the beach of Belgian sea town Nieuwpoort for the first edition of the oceanside triennial Beaufort in 2003. The 5.5-ton, 7-meter-long and 3-meter wide sculpture initially stood staring at the ocean’s horizon and looking for Utopia from there. Since then the turtle is slowly on the move. Like people changing places for all kind of reasons. The first place in Nieuwpoort was only temporarly for the Triennial. A mix of wind, rain, and sand made also the second place in Nieuwpoort unconvenient. At his moment (2017) the turtle is been restored at te city of Oudenaarde. Once restored the sculpture will sit in a new square in Nieuwpoort. In the meanwhile copies that Fabre has made, were looking over the city of Namur from its Citadel (2015) and one at the Piazza della Signoria in Florence,Italy (2016).
